Presently the computer is dominating in every field of life. In this computer era several computer operators complain of neck pain and back tightness during a normal working day, that is mainly due to lack of ergonomics necessary for man in front of computer and video-display Why the need of ergonomics and OT The man usually keeps his neck fixed to 45 degree while operating the computer. Let's see what is the effect of being neck flexed to 45 degree and how ergonomics help to cope up with that, by taking and example. A man having weight of 50 kg operates the computer with neck fixed to 45 degree. The stress over the neck is calculated. The distance from the axis of motion to the C. G. of the head is 10cm. The distance from the axis of motion to the erector spinae is 5 cm The reaction force on Es is calculated by O= Ex0.05x0.1 E= (50x0.1)/0.05=100N R. F-100N-50N=0 R. F=150N When the head is erect The distance from the axis of motion to the C. G. of the head is 2cms. The distance from the erector spinal to the C. G. is 4cms O=Ex0.04-50x0.2 E=(50x0.2)/0.04=25N R. F=50N+25N=75N Thus when the head is erected the reaction force on erector spinae is just half of the posture. When the head is flexible Similarly for the back ergonomics can lesson the stress and ultimately the tightness of the back. The points should be considered during ergonomic advice are i) The height of the chair. ii) The height of the platform of the monitor iii) Postural correction and proper inclination for key-board. |
